The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC) recognized students in its career skills programs during a Dec. 7 ceremony in Huntington. MAMC partners with Mountwest Community & Technical College to offer its nationally recognized programs in Machinist Technology/CNC and Welding Technology.
Tyler Morrison of Ona and Garry Stevenson of Huntington were awarded their associate degrees in Welding Technology. Kelvy Varney of Glenwood and Donald Lord of Huntington earned one-year welding certificates in applied science.
Brandon Roberts of Hurricane; William Gullet of Chesapeake, Ohio; and Nathan Gorby, Shawn Harper and Brady Wilson, all of Huntington; were awarded Welding Technology one-year certificates.
James Mohr of Normantown earned his associate of applied science degree in Machinist Technology/CNC while Trevor Bellomy of Huntington, Evan Jarvis of Milton, William Owen Friend of Charleston and Ty Mullins of Catlettsburg, Ky., were awarded two-year Machinist Technology/CNC certificates. Shannon Jordan of Huntington earned a certificate of applied science in Machinist Technology/CNC.
Receiving their one-year Machinist Technology/CNC certificates were Jenson Oesterreicher of Chesapeake, Ohio; Jarrett Wilson of Huntington and Joshua Saul of Charleston.
Mohr and Mullins received special recognition for each earning all 11 level-one credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS). Mohr is employed as a CNC machinist at MAMC while Mullins plans to continue his studies by pursuing a mechanical engineering degree from Marshall University.
Many graduates and honorees already secured employment in their chosen fields with such area manufacturers as Hercules International, Huntington Steel and Special Metals in Huntington; Industrial Bolting in Charleston; MAMC in South Charleston; and McGinnis International of South Point, Ohio.
To meet the growing demands of area manufacturers, MAMC has expanded its career skills programs, accepting more students, starting new classes in August and January and offering summer classes. MAMC recently announced the addition of a third career skills program called SMART (system maintenance, automation and robotics technology). The first classes will begin in fall 2024. Additional expansion plans will be announced early next year.
“There are more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs open in our region,” said Derek Scarbo, MAMC director. “We will continue efforts to expand the pipeline of skilled talent while providing opportunities for students to train for good-paying, in-demand jobs close to home.”
