Mountain State Derby renewed Sunday in Huntington at 1 p.m.
The No. 1 Marshall University men’s soccer team (16-2) prepares for the 2023 Sun Belt Championship game with the second Mountain State Derby of the season against the fifth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (14-1-4). Sunday’s title match is set for 1 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.

MOUNTAIN STATE DERBY HISTORY
The Herd trails in the all-time series with the Mountaineers, 7-17-2. However, the last five matches have been contentious seeing both teams with a record of 2-2-1, and two of matches being contested with both teams being ranked in the top-six of the United Soccer Coaches Poll with this contest making it three times. WVU took the latest edition of the rivalry 5-2 in Morgantown on October 18th this season.
PRE-MATCH NOTES
- Marshall took its semifinals match over (RV) Kentucky Wildcats 3-0 on Wednesday.
- With the clean sheet, Gabriel Perrotta notched his 10th individual clean sheet, 10.5 overall, this season with three saves.
- Alvaro Garcia-Pascual tallied the opening goal just under four minutes into the second half.
- Then in the 65th minute, the ball deflected around in the 18-yard box to Joao Roberto, who found the back of the goal for the first time of the season.
- Matthew Bell iced off the contest on a combo assist from Rai Pinto and Marco Silva three and a half minutes to go.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
- West Virginia advanced to the championship game with a 2-0 win over South Carolina in the semifinals on Wednesday in Orlando, Florida.
- Luke McCormick and Yutaro Tsukada.
- Marcus Caldeira leads the SBC with 12 goals scored this season.
