The Closing Reception for The Reed Foundation Presents Studio Glass by Joel Philip Myers takes place on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Huntington Museum of Art. Glass artist David Wulfman will speak about the exhibit and refreshments will be served. Admission to this Tuesday Tour Series event is free.
This exhibit of exquisite glass works by contemporary artist Joel Philip Myers (American, b. 1934), whose work combines vibrant, painterly color with powerful, hand-blown forms, will conclude its run at HMA on Sunday, Aug. 27.
Wulfman, who currently lives in Minnesota, is a Huntington native whose parents Robert and Jeanne Wulfman were HMA supporters who encouraged their son to participate in art classes at HMA.
In addition to being an engineering fellow at Boston Scientific, Wulfman has also pursued glass making. In his career, Wulfman says he has “followed a passion for design, invention, and creative problem solving, first as an architect, then later as a mechanical/biomedical engineer.” He says his career path was influenced by “his parents’ appreciation for design as well as the early exposure to art creation he experienced at HMA, from ceramic classes at the age of 4 to glassblowing at 17.”
“We are looking forward to Wulfman’s presentation about our Joel Philip Myers exhibit and learning from his own artistic perspective about the works on display,” said John Farley, HMA Senior Curator / Exhibition Designer. “This exhibit is occasioned by a generous gift from David Wulfman that the Huntington Museum of Art received in 2021 of 13 early glass works made by Joel Philip Myers. Primal and experimental in nature, each reflects the artist’s time in West Virginia as he first learned to manipulate this challenging medium.”
