Kanawha County Democrat Doug Skaff is stepping down as minority leader of the state House of Delegates, he announced Wednesday morning.
Skaff will step down at the end of this month’s legislative interim meetings on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
In the news release, Skaff said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve, but feels it’s time to turn over leadership to someone else.
“I have enjoyed working with Republican Speaker of the House Roger Hanshaw to deliver
common sense solutions for the people of West Virginia,” Skaff said. “In my role as Minority Leader, I worked with Speaker Hanshaw to focus on attracting businesses to our state and creating jobs here as we traveled the country to encourage companies and major corporations to Choose WV.”
Skaff did not immediately respond to a text message seeking further comment.
Skaff is president of HD Media, a chain of West Virginia newspapers that includes the Charleston Gazette-Mail and the Huntington Herald-Dispatch. He’s also vice president of his family’s business, Skaff Family Limited Company, and owner and managing partner of Building & Remodeling Warehouse in Nitro.
House of Delegates Minority Leader Pro Temp Sean Hornbuckle, D-Cabell, will assume the role of minority leader after the August interim meetings, according to the news release.
“Sean is a strong leader, delegate and friend,” Skaff said. “I know that he will lead the caucus well.”
