Located in Ashland, Kentucky, Sal’s Italian Eatery and Speakeasy is a bakery, bar, and restaurant all rolled into one; just don’t let the feds know about what’s in the back! (We are kidding, just part of the fun)
Upon entering Sal’s, guests are greeted by a humble bakery, displaying freshly made crème horns, tiramisu, and cannoli.
There’s free candy on a shelf next to the waiting area, which is utilized by adults just as often as children.
Then the staff lead guests through a hidden passage, covered inconspicuously by an ordinary looking shelf; opening up into the main dining room and bar area, the real attraction is Sal’s Speakeasy, a tribute to the rebelliousness manufactured by the Prohibition Era.
Sometimes they host Murder Mysteries or treat patrons to Rat Pack impersonators; to use appropriate lingo, it’s a real happenin’ joint.
Impressed as I was by the presentation however, I was focused on food.
We started with Fonduta, an Italian fondue served with salami, croutons, and friggitello peppers; off to a great start, I’m noticing such fresh ingredients.
The roasted red pepper soup didn’t disappoint either. Taste wise it was comparable to a tomato mozzarella, only the peppers added a more robust flavor. The cup I was served did not last five minutes in front of me.
For the main course was the Salsiccia cacciatore; angel hair pasta, Italian sausage, tomato sauce, and cheese.
Not to sound like a broken record, but consistency is key when it comes to freshness; the cacciatore ate no differently.
Tender pasta coated with rich tomato sauce, the sausage and cheese are just bonuses.
Finally, we came to the tiramisu, which was new for me. Imagine an Italian ice cream cake, which honestly I prefer over regular ice cream cake. Regular ice cream cake doesn’t include espresso soaked ladyfingers, which explode mocha-chocolatey flavor with each crunch. Tiramisu over ice cream cake any day.
From start to finish, our Sal’s experience was immensely positive in terms of atmosphere, taste, staff, you name it. Sal’s is the total package.
Sal’s Italian Eatery and Speakeasy gets a 10/10 from the Hungry Appalachian.
