Herd kick returner earns his fourth national honor in last week

It’s a new week, but more awards keep coming for Marshall kick returner/wide receiver Jayden Harrison.

On Monday morning, Harrison was named as an FWAA All-America First Team selection by the Football Writers Association of America. The FWAA All-America Team is presented by the GoodYear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Harrison is one of 54 total selections between the two teams and was one of only three Group of Five players named as first-team selections – all on special teams.

The junior from Antioch, Tenn., became Marshall’s first FWAA All-American First Team selection since 2011 (DE Vinny Curry) and only the fourth in program history, joining Randy Moss in 1997, Johnathan Goddard in 2004 and Curry in 2011.

Harrison leads FBS in kickoff return average, gaining 31.9 yards per return. Harrison also has two kickoff returns for touchdowns – a 94-yard return against James Madison and a 98-yard opening kickoff return to jumpstart the Georgia Southern win.

For the season, Harrison has 669 kickoff return yards on 21 returns and has also added 22 catches for 278 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to Monday’s announcement, Harrison was also named as a Walter Camp First Team All-American on Friday, a CBS Sports/247Sports.com All-America First Team selection and a finalist for the 2023 Jet Award, given to the nation’s premier return specialist. Harrison was also named an All-SBC First Team selection as a kick returner.

Since 1945, the FWAA All-America Team has been included among the five teams used to formulate the NCAA’s annual consensus All-America team, which will be announced later this week. Since 2002, the five chosen teams that make up the consensus All-America Team have included the FWAA, the AFCA All-America, the Associated Press, The Sporting News and the Walter Camp Foundation.
