Moms For Liberty, a conservative “parental rights” activist group, launched its first chapter in West Virginia.

The group announced the news in a Facebook post Aug. 17.

The chapter is in Kanawha County, where lawmakers gather for the Legislative session at the State Capitol.

Moms for Liberty is based in Florida, and the Kanawha chapter did not respond to an email for this story.

The nonprofit gained national attention for pushing to elect right-wing candidates to local school boards, and they’ve been at the forefront of a movement to ban books on systemic racism and gender identity.

Moms for Liberty has risen as a power player in national Republican politics after launching in 2021.

“Moms for Liberty is dedicated to fighting for the survival of America by unifying, educating and empowering parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government,” according to the organization’s website. It was founded by former school board members in response to COVID-19 restrictions in schools.

Their membership has grown to 125,000 members with one or more chapters in nearly every state

Moms for Liberty was designated an anti-government extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, in part, for advancing anti-LGBTQ+ misinformation and fighting to remove diverse materials from classrooms. The group pushed back on its designation as a hate group.
