As we look towards the future, the conversations around industry, sustainability, art, progress, community, and justice bring passionate debate out of many Appalachians. The ‘Here and Now’ art exhibition created by Sa-Rai Robinette and Sarah Fox “is not only a visual representation of the voices and aspirations of our community but also serves as a call to action for all of us to come together and create the future we want to live in.” The artworks crafted were inspired in part by conducting interviews and by distributing surveys which gathered information that lead to pieces being produced that “explore themes of equity and justice, sustainability, community, safety, and health.” This is a unique Huntington, WV specific art experience that would not exist without the participation of local citizens who had a wide range of suggestions for how to create progress our area.

This event concept was launched out of participation in the 2022 New Media Advocacy Project ‘Appalachia Reframed’ mentee program which gave a micro grant for art supplies and research. NMAP is a nonprofit organization that “aims to change narratives about social issues by experimenting with new approaches to storytelling.” Appalachia Reframed is a particular NMAP project that is focused on environmental advocacy as well as uplifting LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities (which are more heavily burdened by environmental and economic consequences of fossil fuel projects.)

To attend the ‘Here and Now’ art show, drive around back of the Huntington Museum of Art to Studio 3 on Sunday, January 29th from 6-8pm. HMA is located at 2033 McCoy Rd, Huntington, WV 25701.
