Brown registers fifth triple-double of the season in the victory

FOLEY, Ala. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (13-18) took a five-set battle, 3-2 (25-23, 26-24, 15-25, 23-25, 15-11), from the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (12-16) on Thursday night to move on to the third round of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Brynn Brown recorded her fifth triple-double of the season with 38 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills.

“I’m very proud of our team and how gritty they were tonight,” Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said. “Southern Miss is a tough offensive team and I’m so proud of how we kept our composure after going into the fifth set. Our passing in serve-receive was the best it’s been all season. Our blocking has been consistent all season, but tonight it was the key to winning the game. It’s a short celebration tonight as we need to get ready for another battle with Texas State tomorrow night.”

After USM took the third and fourth sets, Marshall saw itself down 6-3 in the winner take all fifth set. However, a 4-1 rally concluded by a Golden Eagle attacking error, saw MU take an 8-7 lead, its first advantage since leading early in the set at 2-1. After committing an attacking error on the first match point, Olivia Fogo rebounded and put the contest away with her match-high tying 15th kill.

Rallying was the story of the night for the Green and White. The Herd also saw itself down 23-20 late in both of the first and second sets. In the first, Marshall took the final five points of the contest to take the opening frame 25-23 and followed with six of the final seven in the second to win it 26-24 to capture the first two sets.

Lydia Montague finished the contest with nine blocks as Peyton Neal led the team with 30 digs in the victory.
