PARKERSBURG, WV — West Virginia University at Parkersburg (WVUP) is sowing the seeds for a stronger future in agricultural education, thanks to a generous $150,000 donation from local farming advocates Mike and Brenda Miller.
The gift, announced by the WVUP Foundation in February, will directly support Riverhawk Farms, the university’s hands-on agricultural learning facility. The donation will help expand livestock programs and enhance real-world training for students interested in sustainable farming and agribusiness.
“This gift will allow us to expand hands-on learning opportunities for our students,” said John Riggs, director of agriculture at WVUP. “It’s going to have a lasting impact on our students and the future of farming in our region.”

Farming Roots Inspire Giving
Mike Miller, a lifelong farmer and former WVUP Foundation board member, understands the importance of access and opportunity. The Millers own and operate a 300-acre farm with over 100 head of cattle, and they know firsthand how essential it is to give the next generation a strong start.
“A lot of kids today don’t have the chance to get hands-on experience like they used to,” said Mike. “This donation gives them that opportunity.”

Brenda Miller, who shares her husband’s passion for farm life, added a personal touch to their motivation.
“I love to see the babies, and I like knowing what’s on my dinner table,” she said, reflecting on the joy and responsibility of raising livestock.

Boosting Livestock Education
The funds will allow Riverhawk Farms to expand its animal program, giving students the chance to work directly with cattle, chickens, goats, pigs, and more. This type of hands-on learning is crucial for students aiming to pursue careers in farming, sustainable agriculture, and agribusiness.
“Agriculture education is about more than growing crops,” said Mike. “Livestock often sparks students’ interest. If we want to inspire young people to work in agriculture, we need to let them experience it firsthand.”

Investing in the Region’s Future
Olivia Reeder, Executive Director of the WVUP Foundation, praised the Millers’ commitment to both education and their community.
“We are deeply grateful to Mike and Brenda for their generosity,” Reeder said. “Their support will empower students and help grow the future of agriculture in our region.”

The WVUP Foundation plays a vital role in securing private support for scholarships, academic programs, and campus resources. With help from donors like the Millers, the foundation continues to provide transformative opportunities for students across the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Thanks to this generous gift, Riverhawk Farms is poised to become an even more dynamic hub for agricultural learning, ensuring that WVUP students are not only educated in the classroom—but also prepared for life on the land.
