Residents of Wood County have a chance to clear out unwanted clutter and responsibly dispose of hard-to-manage items during this year’s Spring Cleanup Event. Scheduled for Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to noon, the cleanup will be held at the Erickson All-Sports Facility, located at 4601 Camden Avenue in South Parkersburg.
The annual countywide cleanup is organized by the Wood County Solid Waste Authority, in partnership with several organizations that support recycling and environmental efforts.
According to Director Sarah Robinson, the event offers a much-needed opportunity for people to get rid of items that are not accepted through regular trash collection services.
“This is a great chance for everyone to clean up their properties and get rid of those hard-to-dispose items like old appliances (no TVs or computers), scrap metal, and all kinds of paint,” Robinson said.
The event will feature multiple collection stations supported by both state agencies and local businesses:
- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s REAP program will collect up to 10 off-the-rim tires per person, free of charge, with a valid West Virginia ID. REAP will also cover all disposal costs for the tires.
- Waste Management will be on hand to collect all types of paint.
- R&J Recycling has agreed to handle the disposal of scrap metal and appliances — with the exception of TVs and electronic devices.
- Tri-State Roofing will remove freon from all types of refrigerated appliances, ensuring environmentally safe handling.
For those looking to declutter more than just bulky waste, the Rural Action Zero Waste group will be accepting slightly used clothing, textiles, and books. In addition, gently used medical equipment and unopened medical supplies — including items like wheelchairs, walkers, incontinence products, catheters, and wound care materials — will be collected for redistribution to those in need. However, no prescription medications or pills will be accepted at the event.
The 2025 Spring Cleanup is made possible by a variety of local and state sponsors. These include EPI Insulation Co. Inc., Bosley Rental & Supply, R&J Recycling, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, WVDEP REAP, Tri-State Roofing, Rural Action Zero Waste, and Waste Management.
Robinson also reminded the community about the Borrow a Bin program. Through this initiative, the Solid Waste Authority offers 40 recycling bins and 40 trash bins along with trash bags for those hosting local events or cleanups. The trailer carrying the bins can be scheduled for drop-off through the Authority’s office.
“The user is in charge of loading and placing receptacles, as well as the pickup of actual trash and recycling products,” Robinson explained.
For more information about the Spring Cleanup event or to reserve bins through the Borrow a Bin program, residents can call the Wood County Solid Waste Authority at 304-424-1873.
This one-day event is not only a great way to clean up your home or property, but it also supports broader efforts to protect the environment and serve the community by recycling and redistributing useful items.
