For just the second time in program history, West Virginia baseball is heading to the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year — and the Mountaineers are ready to make the most of it.
They’ll take the field this weekend in the Clemson Regional, chasing an opportunity that’s been their goal since day one.
“We’ve said from the beginning — this team is built on opportunities,” said head coach Steve Sabins. “We have depth, and so many guys have fought for the chance to play regularly. Now here we are, with another opportunity. If you make the tournament, you’ve got a shot. That’s all you can ask for in this world.”
This is a historic moment for the program. It’s been 61 years since WVU last achieved three consecutive tournament appearances. Since 2019, the Mountaineers have now reached the NCAA Tournament five times — a testament to the momentum built under longtime coach Randy Mazey and now carried on by Sabins.
“Coach Mazey played a huge role in getting us here,” Sabins added. “Now we’re continuing what he started — winning games and making regionals. Whether you’re the last team in or the first team picked, once you’re in the tournament, anything is possible.”
That mindset resonates with players, too. Outfielder Kyle West, who was part of WVU’s historic Super Regional team last year, knows firsthand how quickly things can happen in the postseason.
“The best thing about the NCAA Tournament is everyone starts with the same record,” West said. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what seed you are. Whether you’re a one-seed or a four-seed, anyone can win on any given day. You just have to bring your best every time you step on the field.”
West Virginia gets its shot at another postseason run starting Friday at noon against Kentucky. For the Mountaineers, it’s more than just a game — it’s a chance to make history once again.
