A man in Kanawha County has been arrested after illegally passing a stopped school bus with its stop sign extended and nearly hitting a student.
The incident took place on March 14 at approximately 3:41 p.m. when Kevin W. Webster ignored the stop sign of a Kanawha County school bus and dangerously drove past, nearly striking a child who was attempting to cross the street.
Investigation and Arrest
Following the incident, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office issued a public request for help in identifying the driver of a white Lincoln sedan seen in the area. Thanks to assistance from the community, law enforcement was able to confirm Webster as the driver.
Authorities later released a follow-up statement thanking the public for their cooperation, which played a crucial role in tracking down the suspect. Webster was arrested on March 15, with additional reports from the Saint Albans Police Department linking him to similar incidents involving the same vehicle.
Video Evidence and Charges
Investigators reviewed video surveillance footage, which showed Webster pulling into a 7-Eleven just moments before the incident. This crucial footage helped authorities positively identify him as the driver.
During an interview with law enforcement, further evidence was gathered, leading to an additional charge of driving under the influence (DUI) as a habitual drug user.
Webster is now facing multiple charges, including DUI, reckless driving, overtaking and passing a school bus, and driving with a suspended license.
Safety Reminder from Authorities
Law enforcement officials emphasized the critical importance of stopping for school buses to protect children and ensure their safety. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and encouraged anyone with additional evidence related to the case to come forward.
