West Virginia Boys & Girls Clubs announce youth of the year at statewide event

CHARLESTON — Sydney B., a member of the Boys & Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle, has been named the West Virginia State Youth of the Year. She was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, along with an additional $1,000 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Virginia Area Council.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of West Virginia honored the state’s most inspiring young leaders during the West Virginia State Youth of the Year event, held on March 21 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston.

This event recognized outstanding teens who have demonstrated strong leadership, academic success, community involvement, and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Sydney B. will now advance to the Midwest Regional Youth of the Year competition, where she has the chance to compete for a spot at the national level. Meanwhile, Hadleigh F., from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Parkersburg, was named West Virginia Jr. Youth of the Year in recognition of Hadleigh’s leadership and contributions.

“For more than 75 years, the Youth of the Year program has celebrated young individuals who embody resilience, ambition, and a passion for making a difference,” said Dr. Jennifer Bateman, senior vice president of youth development for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“This year’s winners and finalists showcase the best of our Clubs, proving how mentorship, education, and support can empower young people to reach their full potential.”

The multi-day program gave participants opportunities to engage in leadership training, network with state officials, and take part in a formal judging competition. Finalists shared their personal stories, emphasizing the positive impact the Boys & Girls Clubs have had on their lives. Community leaders from across the state attended the event.

As the newly named West Virginia State Youth of the Year, Sydney B. will serve as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth across the state. She will participate in community events and activities and will represent West Virginia at the Midwest Region Youth of the Year competition in Chicago.
