The Class AA All-State Softball Team for 2024 is packed with talent—and St. Marys and Doddridge County are proudly represented among West Virginia’s best.
At the top of the list is Oak Glen sophomore Mattie Carney, who led her team to the state championship and earned captain honors on the all-state first team, as selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
Carney was a force on the mound and at the plate, finishing her sophomore campaign with a 20-7 record, 223 strikeouts, and a walk-to-strikeout ratio of nearly 8:1. She also batted .431, smashed four home runs, scored 52 runs, drove in 27 RBI, and stole 27 bases. She pitched every game of the postseason and led Oak Glen to both a state title and an OVAC championship.
“She wants to win—plain and simple,” said Oak Glen coach Sherrie Garner. “She’s a competitor with incredible endurance, and she thrives on the energy from her teammates and the crowd.”

Carney isn’t the only pitcher turning heads. Cali Masters, a senior from St. Marys, joins her on the first team after an outstanding season, boasting a 0.99 ERA and a scorching .552 batting average with 30 RBI. Masters has earned first-team all-state honors every year of her high school career.
Joining her on the mound are Myleigh Adkins of Logan (1.50 ERA, 11 home runs) and Josie Frizzell of Wheeling Central (2.02 ERA, 246 strikeouts).
