Peter “Pete” Brooks Wharton, 37, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, passed away on May 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and passion for life that touched many. Born on July 29, 1987, to Jerrold and Mary Wharton, Pete grew up in Parkersburg and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 2005.
Following high school, Pete answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army in 2006. He completed his basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and although he received an honorable medical discharge, his pride in his military service remained strong throughout his life.
After his time in the Army, Pete focused on his education, earning an Associate Degree in Auto/Diesel Technology from Washington State Community College in 2009.
Pete’s career path took him to Delaware, Ohio, where he worked for Road Link Trucking Depot before advancing to a leadership position as Assistant Manager at Advance Auto Parts. In recent years, he returned to the Mid-Ohio Valley, joining the team at Pactiv-Evergreen in Mineral Wells, West Virginia. His work ethic and leadership skills were always evident to those who knew him.
Outside of his professional life, Pete was an avid competitor in the world of cross country and off-road motorcycle racing. Over nearly 15 years, he competed in the WEXCR series and the GNCC circuit, gaining respect and admiration within the racing community.
His dedication to the sport was clear—cross country motorcycle racing demands immense stamina, focus, and physical endurance, and Pete exhibited these qualities every time he mounted his bike.
One of his proudest moments came in 2014 when he secured third place in the Open C class, a testament to his skill and perseverance. Racing was more than a hobby for Pete—it was a passion that helped define who he was.
Pete’s warm heart and loyalty extended far beyond the racetrack. Known for his kindness and willingness to help others, he was a friend and family member who could always be counted on. Whether it was lending a hand, sharing a laugh, or simply being present, Pete’s thoughtful nature left a lasting impression on those around him.
He is survived by his son, Kayden Michael Wharton of Columbus, Ohio; his fiancée, Keri Payne of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and her children Nathan, Hunter, Maverick, Axel, and Alyssa; his parents, Jerrold and Mary Wharton of Parkersburg; and his sisters, Andrea (Andrew) Kjos of Ankeny, Iowa, and Estelle (Willis) Hatcher of Hampstead, North Carolina.
He also leaves behind beloved aunts and uncles, James (Sharon) Dulude of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Diana (Robert) Ridgway of New Cumberland, West Virginia, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Pete was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Helen Dulude of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and Denzil and Doris Wharton of Alvy, West Virginia, as well as his aunt, Deborah Dulude of North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held on May 29, 2025, at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, 400 Green Street, Parkersburg, West Virginia. Family and friends are invited to gather at 10 a.m., with the service beginning at 12 p.m.
