West Virginia baseball head coach Steve Sabins is juggling a busy schedule—balancing preparations for the NCAA super regional series against LSU while diving deep into the transfer portal to strengthen his team.

One of his early recruiting wins is snagging a commitment from standout Division II All-American outfielder Paul Schoenfeld from Colorado Mesa University.

Schoenfeld’s baseball journey includes a season at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas, before he blossomed into a star at Colorado Mesa. Over the past three seasons, he has steadily improved his game and stats.

This year, Schoenfeld hit an impressive .420 batting average across 56 games, going 94-for-224 at the plate.

He also showed power and speed, hitting nine home runs, driving in 55 RBIs, and stealing 19 bases. Over his three seasons with Colorado Mesa, he maintained a .400 batting average, with a total of 16 home runs, 108 RBIs, 36 doubles, and seven triples.

Looking ahead to next season, West Virginia will have an open outfield spot with Jace Rinehart graduating.

Plus, Skylar King is eligible for the MLB draft, so if he signs with a pro team, the Mountaineers could need to fill two key outfield positions. Schoenfeld’s commitment helps ease that transition, adding experience and talent to the squad.

Coach Sabins and the Mountaineers are optimistic that Schoenfeld’s addition will bolster their chances as they prepare for a competitive season ahead.
