Nitro (W.Va.) standout Malachi Thompson made the most of his first 7-on-7 tournament of the summer, showcasing his skills at West Virginia University alongside his high school teammates.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound wide receiver played a key role in helping his team advance deep into the bracket before falling to eventual champion Wise. Thompson stood out with his ability to consistently get open and deliver in clutch moments.

“I love the environment,” Thompson said. “I’m glad my team got to experience that and compete against good competition.”

Coming off a monster 2023 season—hauling in 74 receptions for 1,590 yards and 18 touchdowns—Thompson has already made a name for himself. His performance last year earned him the prestigious Randy Moss Award, given to the top receiver in West Virginia.

While at WVU, Thompson had the opportunity to speak with wide receivers coach Ryan Garrett, head coach Rich Rodriguez, and other members of the Mountaineers staff. The feedback he received was encouraging.

“They said they really liked my game and that I did very well,” Thompson said.

As an in-state recruit, West Virginia naturally holds a special place in Thompson’s recruitment. While he hasn’t made a final decision yet, competing in front of the WVU staff has certainly elevated his interest.

Currently, Thompson holds a top five of Marshall, Ohio, Temple, Toledo, and Miami (Ohio). He’s already taken official visits to Marshall and Ohio and plans to visit two more schools before finalizing his decision later this June.

With his size, skill, and proven production, Thompson is shaping up to be one of the most exciting prospects in West Virginia’s 2026 class. Whether he ends up in Morgantown or elsewhere, there’s no doubt Thompson has a bright future ahead on the field.
