Lewis County was buzzing with activity this past weekend as hundreds of visitors from across West Virginia and neighboring states gathered for the much-anticipated annual Beef Expo, held at WVU Jackson’s Mill. The two-day event, which took place on Friday and Saturday, offered more than just a cattle sale—it was a celebration of West Virginia’s beef industry, a platform for youth education, and a meaningful economic boost for the local community.

A Unique Gathering for Cattle Breeders and Enthusiasts

WVU Lewis County Extension Agent Bruce Loyd described the event as truly one-of-a-kind in West Virginia. “It’s different from all the other events because it’s really the only event in the state where all the different beef breeds come together to have a joint event, have a sale,” Loyd explained. “We also have these other youth educational activities and so on. And there’s just not any other beef event like that in the state.”

This year’s expo featured the sale of approximately 150 head of cattle, representing six different beef breeds. The diversity on display highlighted the strength and variety of West Virginia’s cattle industry. Breeders, buyers, and agricultural students alike had the opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and support local and regional producers.

Educational Opportunities for All Ages

Beyond cattle sales, the expo served as a learning hub for farmers, students, and families. Workshops on stockmanship and stewardship gave attendees valuable insights into animal care, breeding practices, and sustainable farming methods. These sessions are designed to promote best practices in agriculture and prepare the next generation of producers.

Youth engagement is a key feature of the expo. Through hands-on educational programs and activities, young people gain exposure to the cattle industry in a supportive and inspiring environment. Many youth participants view the expo as a stepping stone to future careers in agriculture and animal science.

A Collaboration That Strengthens the Community

The success of the Beef Expo is built on collaboration. The event is made possible through a partnership among several important organizations: the West Virginia breed associations, the West Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, West Virginia Cattle Women, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, and the WVU Extension Service.
