A former basketball player from Harman High School in Randolph County is facing three felony charges following a disturbing on-court incident. Gage Ketterman, 18, from Bowden, has been charged with malicious assault and two counts of attempted malicious assault after allegedly injuring an opponent during a game.
The incident occurred on February 26 during a game between Harman and Union high schools. According to reports, a 17-year-old player from Union was elbowed in the face by Ketterman, resulting in a broken nose and significant bleeding that lasted for several hours. The victim’s mother contacted the West Virginia State Police, prompting an investigation into the incident.
State Police reviewed game footage, which included several video clips that were provided by witnesses. In the criminal complaint filed by the victim’s mother, she described Ketterman’s actions as clearly intentional, stating, “The actions of this boy were obviously intentional, and he was trying to hurt people.”
One of the video clips shows Ketterman deliberately swinging his elbow into the victim’s face, with both feet planted on the ground. Another clip appears to show Ketterman swinging his elbow wildly, striking the back of the victim’s head. A third clip allegedly shows Ketterman swinging his elbow towards the head of a different Union player, escalating the severity of the actions.
This incident has sparked concern in the community about safety in high school sports and the potential consequences of on-court violence. As the legal process continues, Ketterman faces serious charges, which could have significant legal and personal consequences.
