Fuel Spill Shuts Down I-79 North Near Morgantown

A fuel spill on I-79 at mile marker 148 has led to the closure of all northbound lanes near the I-68 split.

Traffic Diversions in Place

Drivers heading west on I-68 are being rerouted to I-79 south, while I-79 northbound traffic is being redirected to I-68 west.

Cause of the Spill

According to MECCA 911 Executive Director Jim Smith, a large truck carrying fuel oil appears to have slammed on its brakes suddenly, causing several hundred gallons of fuel to spill onto the roadway. Early investigations suggest driver error may have played a role in the crash.

Clean-Up Efforts Underway

Firefighters, state police, and state Division of Highways crews are at the scene. A large load of sand is being delivered to help absorb the fuel and speed up the cleanup process.

“There is no estimated time for reopening the road, but crews are working as quickly as possible,” Smith said.
