A flood warning is in place for several counties in the Mid-Ohio Valley tonight as heavy rainfall continues to cause dangerous road conditions.
The National Weather Service in Charleston issued the warning, which remains in effect until 11:15 p.m. This alert includes Wood, Doddridge, Harrison, Ritchie, and Tyler counties in West Virginia, as well as Washington County in Ohio.
Local emergency services are already responding to high water and storm damage.
In Wood County, College Parkway and Lakeview Drive are currently closed due to flooding. The 911 Center also reported fallen trees in several areas, though crews with the West Virginia State Highway Patrol have begun clearing them.
Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard urged drivers to take extra caution.
“Be cautious of any water puddling on the roadways,” Woodyard said. “Don’t drive through high water.”
In neighboring Washington County, Ohio, the 900 block of Veto Road has also been shut down due to high water. The Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to find alternate routes and avoid flooded areas altogether.
Safety First: Turn Around, Don’t Drown
Authorities across the region are stressing the same message—never attempt to drive through high water. Even shallow flooding can be powerful enough to stall or sweep away vehicles.
If you’re traveling tonight, check local alerts before heading out, avoid roads that look flooded, and give emergency crews room to work.
Stay safe and stay tuned to official updates from local emergency services and the National Weather Service as the situation develops.
