CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The cause of the devastating fire that destroyed a Cabell County apartment building earlier this week remains unknown, according to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.
In a statement released on Friday, officials confirmed that a Deputy Fire Marshal who responded to the scene was able to pinpoint the apartment where the fire started. However, despite initial investigative efforts, authorities have not yet determined what sparked the blaze.
The fire, which erupted on Tuesday, rapidly spread throughout the building, ultimately consuming 21 apartment units and leaving 24 residents without a home. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to contain the flames, but the extent of the damage rendered the building uninhabitable.
In addition to the loss of property, two individuals were injured in the fire. One was a resident of the apartment complex, while the other was a firefighter from the Barboursville Fire Department who sustained injuries while battling the blaze. Fortunately, both individuals received medical treatment and have since been discharged from the hospital.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. The Fire Marshal’s Office is working diligently to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the community.
