Carlton Hill Farm offers quail, rabbit and chicken

For Sean and Alexys Carlton, sustainable farming isn’t just a business—it’s a lifelong dream come true. After years in the information technology industry, the couple decided to follow their passion and establish Carlton Hill Farm, a small-scale, sustainable farm located in Valley Mills, Wood County.

In December 2023, the Carltons purchased an acre of land with the goal of creating a farm dedicated to raising rabbit, quail, and chicken for meat, as well as producing fresh eggs, seasonal vegetables, wildflowers, and nutrient-rich rabbit manure for gardening. Their journey from IT professionals to full-time farmers is a testament to their commitment to providing fresh, locally sourced food while maintaining ethical and sustainable farming practices.

A Passion for Farming

“We’ve always had farming in our blood,” Alexys said. Though originally from Colorado, she spent her summers on her grandparents’ farm in North Dakota. The couple worked in IT for nearly 15 years in the Eastern Panhandle, but the desire to return to their agricultural roots never faded. When they discovered the property on Valley Mills Road, they knew it was the perfect place to bring their vision to life.

Instead of converting the existing barn into a home, the Carltons lived in a camper for several months while preparing the farm for production. “Usually, people turn the barn into a house,” Sean said. “But for us, the priority was getting the farm up and running.”

A Focus on Ethical and Sustainable Farming

Carlton Hill Farm is now home to more than 150 rabbits, chickens, and quail, each carefully raised in separate sections of the farm. Maintaining strict biosecurity measures, the Carltons work tirelessly to protect their animals from diseases such as bird flu.

The farm is also deeply committed to environmental sustainability. By managing every step of the process—from raising livestock to harvesting produce—Carlton Hill Farm ensures that food is ethically produced while keeping costs competitive with grocery store prices.

“All of our meats are processed on-site,” Sean explained. “This way, we maintain complete control over quality, ethics, and sustainability.”

Bringing Fresh Food to the Community

As part of their mission to make fresh, local food accessible, the Carltons plan to open a roadside farm stand at the entrance of Carlton Hill Farm. Expected to open by mid-April, the stand will offer fresh eggs, meats, and seasonal produce.
