Op-Ed: Let’s Build Economic Freedom for Every West Virginian

Published On:

As a small business owner, lifelong West Virginian, and proud conservative Republican, I’ve seen our state undergo a dramatic political shift over the past decade. Where Republicans once held only a few seats in the Legislature, today we have a supermajority in both chambers and hold every statewide office.

When my father, former Congressman David B. McKinley, served in the West Virginia Legislature in the 1980s and early 1990s, Republicans barely had a voice. There were times when just one or two Republicans served in the 34-member Senate, and only a handful in the House of Delegates. That time has passed. Today, we are in a position of strength. And with great power comes even greater responsibility.

Now is the moment to put aside division and work together — Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike — to strengthen our economy, create jobs, and ensure that every West Virginian has the opportunity to succeed.

Why I Started the Mountaineer Freedom Alliance

That’s why I’ve launched the Mountaineer Freedom Alliance — a nonpartisan organization committed to supporting leaders who focus on smart policies that grow our economy and uplift families across the state.

This group isn’t about party labels. It’s about backing candidates and ideas that promote economic freedom, job creation, and opportunity for all — regardless of political affiliation.

We believe our communities should welcome people from all walks of life. That means supporting business leaders, teachers, healthcare workers, and public servants who are building a better future — not just for those who share their views, but for everyone.

What We’ve Achieved — And Where We Must Go

Over the last ten years, conservative leadership has made West Virginia more competitive. We’ve passed the largest tax cut in our state’s history. We’ve reformed outdated laws and regulations. We’ve worked to grow our energy sector — all while staying true to West Virginia values.

But we can’t stop there.

To truly unlock our state’s potential, we must address the real challenges that are holding us back:

  • Workforce shortages — Businesses across industries, from mining to tech and hospitality, struggle to find skilled workers.
  • Substance abuse — Drug addiction continues to harm families and reduce workforce participation.
  • Infrastructure needs — Roads, broadband, and water systems need serious upgrades to keep up with other states.

These are not Republican or Democratic issues. These are West Virginia issues.

A Call to Action for Leaders and Voters

We need political leaders who will prioritize workforce development, education, and healthcare access. We need voters to elect those who are focused on building communities, not fueling political division.

Let’s support candidates who want to see West Virginia thrive — who value hard work, service, and results over partisanship.

Our state motto, Montani Semper LiberiMountaineers Are Always Free — isn’t just a phrase. It’s a call to action.
