In a new push to promote healthier living, Governor Patrick Morrisey has introduced a fresh challenge to residents across West Virginia: walk at least one mile each day—and do it in the state’s stunning parks.

Last week, the governor unveiled the Mountaineer Mile program, a key part of his broader health initiative. The program now includes designated trails in 32 state parks, each offering the perfect path to log your daily mile.

“As we’re getting out and getting active, what better place to kick off the Mountaineer Mile than in one of our beautiful West Virginia state parks,” Morrisey said during the announcement.

A Simple Step Toward a Healthier Lifestyle

The idea behind the Mountaineer Mile is simple: help West Virginians reconnect with the outdoors and their health by committing to daily movement—just one mile at a time.

Even in a state known for its outdoor beauty, many people still spend the majority of their days indoors. Whether it’s working at a desk or just not finding time for movement, modern life often keeps us inactive. This initiative hopes to change that.

Department of Human Services Secretary Alex Mayer spoke candidly at the event, saying, “I could easily find a lot of excuses why I can’t get out there and do those things that are going to keep me healthy. But for me, it’s about finding that purpose — staying healthy.”

Walking for the Body and Mind

Walking a mile a day may not sound like much, but it can make a big impact. It gets your heart pumping, clears your mind, and allows you to appreciate the natural beauty of West Virginia — not just in the state parks, but in your own neighborhood or local trails.

Gov. Morrisey isn’t just talking the talk, either. He’s walking the walk—literally. At the time of the announcement, he had completed 19 straight days of Mountaineer Mile walks and planned to hit day 20 right after his speech.

“If someone with a schedule as packed as a governor’s can do it, so can the rest of us,” he said.

Take the First Step

You don’t need special gear or hours of free time. Just lace up your shoes, head to your local park or trail, and start walking. A mile is around 2,440 steps—something most people can accomplish in about 15–20 minutes.

This isn’t just a physical challenge; it’s a mindset shift. It’s about making time for yourself, your health, and appreciating the wild, wonderful landscape that makes West Virginia unique.
