In a standout season filled with talent across the state, one name rose to the top: Carson Carver. The Winfield High School pitcher was officially named captain of the Class AAA All-State baseball team for 2024, a recognition of his dominant presence on the mound and leadership throughout the season.
Carver, a senior, anchored the Generals’ pitching rotation and helped guide Winfield to an impressive run in the state tournament. His fastball command, composure under pressure, and ability to shut down opposing hitters made him one of the most feared arms in West Virginia high school baseball this year.
“Carson is the kind of kid every coach wants on their team,” said Winfield head coach Steve Hensley. “He’s not only got the skills, but the mindset. He works hard, leads by example, and keeps his teammates focused no matter the situation.”
A Season of Standout Performances
Carver posted a stellar ERA throughout the season, consistently going deep into games and rarely giving up big innings. Opposing batters struggled to make solid contact against him, and his strikeout numbers reflected just how overpowering he could be when locked in.
But his leadership went beyond stats. Whether it was giving a pep talk in the dugout or maintaining composure after an error in the field, Carver proved himself as a true team-first player.
“It’s an honor,” Carver said after hearing the news. “I’ve played with and against some incredible talent this year, so to be named captain of this team means a lot. I couldn’t have done it without my coaches, teammates, and the community behind me.”
Statewide Talent Recognized
The Class AAA All-State team, selected by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association, highlights the top players from across the state’s largest schools. Alongside Carver, the team features a mix of powerhouse hitters, lockdown defenders, and clutch performers—all of whom made major impacts for their teams this spring.
For Winfield, Carver’s recognition brings pride not only to the baseball program but to the entire community. His captaincy caps off a high school career that’s earned him admiration and respect from coaches, teammates, and opponents alike.
Looking Ahead
With graduation just behind him, Carver now sets his sights on college, where he’s expected to continue his baseball journey. While his future looks bright, he leaves behind a lasting legacy at Winfield—one defined by hard work, humility, and leadership.
“He’s going to do great things,” said Coach Hensley. “Wherever he ends up, they’re getting one of the best.”
As the 2024 baseball season comes to a close, Carver’s captaincy serves as a reminder of what high school sports are all about—talent, teamwork, and the kind of quiet leadership that makes a lasting difference.
