The Wood County Commission took a moment this week to honor both community spirit and public service.
During Monday’s meeting, commissioners recognized the Lubeck Acres Garden Club for their efforts to beautify neighborhoods and promote a culture of hard work, wellness, and independence. The commission unanimously approved a proclamation naming June 1–7 as National Garden Week in Wood County.
“Gardening promotes a healthy lifestyle that lasts a lifetime, helps reduce stress from other areas of our life, teaches that rewards can come from diligent efforts,” the proclamation read. It also praised garden clubs for their community service and dedication to making a positive impact wherever they live and work.
Dina Braniff, representing the Lubeck Acres Garden Club, joined the meeting to mark the occasion. She shared details about a community gathering the club is hosting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the South Parkersburg Branch of the Parkersburg-Wood County Public Library. The event will showcase local gardening projects and celebrate the club’s strong presence in the area.
In other county news, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office added a new deputy to its ranks.
Walker Riddle was officially sworn in after completing a unique training path. While finishing his enlistment in the U.S. Army, Riddle was able to spend time working with the sheriff’s office and attend the West Virginia State Police Academy. His dedication paid off — Riddle was honored as the outstanding officer in his academy class.
“We are lucky to have him, and we are one step closer to being fully staffed,” said Chief Deputy Mike Deem.
From community gardens to law enforcement, this week’s commission meeting was a celebration of service, dedication, and progress in Wood County.
