West Virginia baseball has made history. For the first time ever, the Mountaineers have clinched an outright Big 12 regular season championship, cementing their place at the top of the conference in 2025.

Heading into the weekend, WVU needed either a win against Kansas or a loss by Arizona State to secure the Big 12 crown. Despite dropping their Thursday night game 3-0 to the Jayhawks, the Mountaineers still got the outcome they needed. That same night, Arizona State fell to Oklahoma State 6-2, officially handing the title to West Virginia.

This marks only the second Big 12 regular season title in WVU baseball history. The Mountaineers previously shared the title in 2023, but this time, they stand alone. It’s the first outright Big 12 title not just for the baseball program, but for any of WVU’s three major sports—football, men’s basketball, or baseball—since joining the conference in 2012.

The clinching moment came down to win percentage. Even if Arizona State were to win out the rest of the weekend, the best they could finish is with a .667 win percentage. West Virginia, despite their loss to Kansas, sits at .679, a number that won’t dip below ASU’s mark even if the Mountaineers lose the remainder of their games.

Interestingly, the final Big 12 standings could still see WVU finish with fewer conference wins than either Arizona State or Kansas, but their higher win percentage gives them the edge—and the crown.

With the Big 12 title now officially in hand, the Mountaineers also claim the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament, which begins next week. WVU will receive a first-round bye and will play the winner of the 8/9 matchup on Thursday, May 22nd.

This achievement highlights an incredible journey for West Virginia this season. The Mountaineers stormed through non-conference play and survived tough battles within the league to earn their place at the top. Their dominance and consistency have paid off in a way that has never before been accomplished by the baseball program.

It’s a milestone that resonates beyond the diamond. The victory sets a new standard for Mountaineer athletics and gives fans reason to believe this could be the start of an even brighter era. As the team heads into postseason play with momentum and the No. 1 seed, hopes are high in Morgantown.

More than a title, this moment is a testament to the hard work, discipline, and drive of the WVU baseball team. With the Big 12 championship banner now theirs, the Mountaineers are ready to chase even bigger goals on the national stage.
